Norton, Rosaleen

Norton, Rosaleen
(1917–1979)
An artist who was born in New Zealand but lived and worked in Australia and gained notoriety as the “witch of King’s Cross.” Norton’s creative output included such paintings as “Lucifer,” “Witches Sabbat,” and “Individuation,” and the dark, erotic content of these and other works led to trials for obscenity. The altered states of consciousness Norton engaged with in her occult and art practices (if the two may be so disengaged) have been associated with shamanic practices.
